The drought that has been choking the town of Washington since last May has made itself felt across the rest of the country. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, the nation's five largest rivers averaged about three per cent below normal flow in 1980. only the third time in the past ten years that flow has been below average.
On the East Coast, the year was even drier than across the nation as a whole. According to the chief of the Geological Survey's Hydrologic Information Unit, combined flow to the Chesapeake Bay averaged about 41 billion gallons a day during 1980. 17 per cent below average. In December, the Bay's flow dropped to 60 per cent below normal.
