Of Doric architecture, the church was originally constructed on town lot number 22 entirely under the direction of James Leake Powers (1799-188^), a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson's who also worked on the University of Virginia under the supervision of the third U.S. presideni. In addition, Leake was respondible for the woodwork on the county court house and built Trinity Kpiscopal Church as well as a number of Washington's more prominent homes.
By 1927, membership in the Presbyterian Church had dropped to just two—Miss Lucy Stuart and Mrs. Pauline Slaughter—with Reverands Robert S.
