Tannery Hearing
The supervisors set Monday, March 2, for public hearings on a Slate Mills rezoning application and request for an ordinance amendment from Witold Kuncewkz to allow tanning of fish and reptile hides as a use allowed by right in a commercial zone.
“The thing that bothers me is the pollution and the discharge permit.” said Luke in reply to Mrs. Kuncewicz's inquiry on whether the supervisors had any questions on the tannery. The chairman said he is also concerned with decisions from the district health department and State Water Control Board relating to the tannery. He questioned whether 15 pounds of chromium, a byproduct of the tanning process, could be disposed of in Community Trash’s dumpsters which are leased by the county or in the company's privately operated landfill.
(Although state law requires local governments to provide for solid waste disposal. Rappahannock County does not have a public landfill. The county contracts with Community Trash to dispose of solid waste collected from dumpsters at various locations.
