The next step is to make a scale model in plasticene - a kind of modeling clay. Then, the sculptor carves out the general outline of the piece and makes her first cuts. After the outline, the details are worked out. The process takes months, sometimes years.

Does she ever make a bad cut that ruins the whole piece? Mrs. Lewis laughed. “That’s why we work with very small, precise cuts and markings,” she said.

The process is different for a poured metal sculpture such as bronze. Then the molds are carved out and sent away to be poured. “1 like direct carving better," Mrs. Lewis said. "To do your own pouring you have to have a sand pit and a firing furnace.”
