James Carroll Racer Sr., 84, of Washington died Friday, September 11, 1981 in the Veterans Administration Center, Martinsburg, W. Va.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Washington Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Wiley and the Rev. John Burke. Burial was in the Racer family cemetery, Washington.
Mr, Racer, a retired farmer and a World War I veteran, served in France with Company D, 116 Infantry. 29th Division. He was a native of Rappahannock County, the son of the late Richard W. and Lucy Jenkins Racer. He was a member of Oakley Baptist Church.
Surviving with his widow, Alice Clatterbuck Racer are five daughters. Esther Leonard of Arlington, Mae Johnson of Wheaton, Md., Lois Settle of Amissville, Beverly Racer and Hope Racer, both of Washington; three sons, James Racer Jr. and Calvin Racer, both of Washington and George Racer of Waldorf. Md.; 17 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren.
Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Robert Jacobs of Ellicott City. Md., Mrs. Willie Payne of Washington and Mrs. Ollie Fincham of Sperryville; and a brother, Clarence Racer of Harrisonburg. He was preceded in death by one son, Russell L. Racer.
Mr. Racer was one of three from Rappahannock County who first volunteered his services in World War I.
