Equally misleading is Baliles’ allegations that Durrett^has vacillated on the abortion issue. He charges that Wyatt Durrette once sponsored "sweeping liberal reforms” of abortion law. The truth is that Durrette has consistently opposed abortion, and that after the 1973 United States Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, Durrette sponsored legislation to. restrict the incidence and availability of abortions to the maximum extent permitted under the Supreme Court decision. The “sweeping liberal reform” of which Baliles spoke was required by that decision, whereas public funding of abortions has never been required. How interesting it is that Mr. Baliles conveniently forgot to mention the fact that in addition to supporting legalized abortion. Baliles voted for public funding of abortion daring his term in the legislature!
The allegation that Wyatt Durrette has ever opposed capital punishment is another absolute distortion of fact. After Virginia’s capital punishment statutes were held to be unconstitutional bv the U.S. Supreme Court, Wyatt Durrette supported the legislation which successfully reinstated the death penalty within the parameters of the Supreme Court decision. His only negative vote on the subject was against a bill based upon his belief that the proposed
