Fall Arrives

Fall begins on September 22 at 1:05 p.m. EDT when the center of the sun crosses directly over the earth’s equator marking the autumnal equinox.
“From this moment until the beginning of spring,” Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia, explained, “the sun is south of the equator, providing less heat in the northern hemisphere but bringing warmer temperatures to the southern hemisphere.”
On this day, the sun rises due east and sets due west, remaining in the sky exactly twelve hours all over Earth (equinox means “equal night”). At the North Pole, the sun is seen axactly on the horizon and the long polar night begins.
The Science Museum will dedicate the world’s largest analemmic sundial, plotted and marked in bright colors on its parking lot, in a ceremony beginning at 11:55 a.m., September 22. Music by bagpipers, a brief walkthrough of the sundial and lunch on the lawn are planned as part of the festivities. The event is free.
