Invented Energy Saving Kiln
He ended up with a shop in Georgetown as an outlet for his work. “I had a fantastic time but it wasn’t paying off so 1 started giving classes. I needed a small kiln and thought I was really lucky when I was offered a great deal on three electric models. Then Pepco said it would cost $700 just to install them and on top of that, informed me I could expect electrical bills of $200 to $300 per month. There goes your class profits!”
With the electric bill threat sparking Robinson's creative talents, another invention was born of old mother necessity. Rather than allow the utility company to gobble up the tuition fees, he designed and developed a gas fired kiln, patent number 3,752,643, intending to use the model primarily for his own classes. But rising costs of energy put other potters in the same financial squeeze and so he found himself with almost as many buyers for his $1.50 per firing kilns as he had for his vases and bowls.
