Nethers Mill has stood abandoned for generations, its corners stacked with spider webs instead of the bags of wheat and com that once waited to be ground into flour and meal.
Though the water wheel hasn’t made a turn since it squeaked to a halt so many years ago, today the shelves in the old mill are full again, this time with vases, urns, bowls and other utilitarian pieces of art created by potter Worden Robinson.
Robinson moved to the banks of the Hughes River under the shadow of Old Rag Mountain about five years ago, another refugee displaced by the high cost of city living that takes its toll on pocket books and nervous systems. Since he and his wife and children settled near the Rappahannock-Madison line, they’ve “gQne country.” Worden now divides his energy between pottery and the related business interests he brought out from Capitol Hill plus the vegetable garden, goats, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, cats and dogs that the family has acquired since their exodous from D. C.
