Enterprising bird fanciers can make a special suet stick for their mix. In a small log two-feet-long and two-tothree inches in diameter, drill holes one inch in diameter and 1 ‘/2 inches deep. Press the suet mix into the holes and hang the stick from a tree or the eaves of the porch. A piece of a two-by-two or two-by-four board can be substituted for the log but it won't look quite so charmingly rustic.
Favorite seeds to use in the suet mix include mullet, hemp, sunflower and seeds from the cucumber family (squash, watermelon, cantelope, etc.) Birds also will enjoy grains — whole, cracked, meal and hominy corn; popped and ground popcorn; whole or rolled oats; barley, wheat, buckwheat and soy beans.
