Several bills were introduced last week in the General Assembly to crack down on drunken drivers.
One bill, patroned by Sen. A. Joe Canada Jr. (R-Virginia Beach), would establish mandatory sentences for first offenders. The new law would require first offenders to serve a 48-hour jail term or their license would be suepended for at least W days, even if the person entered an alcohol rehabilitation program.
The bill also would toughen both sentences and fines for repeat offenders.
Sen. Canada presented his bill, which was modeled after California laws, at a news conference last week. He was accompanied by Susan Midgette. president of the Virginia chapter of Mothers Against Drunken Driving (MADD). and by Lillian DeVenny. vice president of the state chapter of MADD.
