But with a wood stove, particularly the new air-tight models, oxygen drifts slowly up the chimney, giving the vapor more chance to condense back into water upon contact with the colder chimney walls and coating the walls with creosote.
Two Type* Of Cresote
There are two kinds of creosote—a crystal type that is easily brushed off and a shiny, tar-like type that is extremely difficult to remove, according to Vierling.
A slowly burning, banked fire in one of the newer airtight wood stoves provides plenty of heat; at the same time, it provides plenty of tar-like creosote, the chimney sweep noted.
To change the sticky hardto-remove creosote into the easily brushed away crystal variety, Vierling advised burning a hot fire in the wood stove once a day with controls open to provide lots of oxygen.
Fireplace chimneys need cleaning every two or three years while the chimney for a wood stove must be cleaned at least once every burning season and sometimes even more frequently.
