They adopted the “grand ox” (ground ox), which was the German name for woodchuck, as their prophet. The word later became part of the English language as groundhog.
February 2 developed a particularly interesting tradition among the funloving Pennsylvania Germans. Groups organized into groundhog lodges which would hold meetings to observe the behavior of their chosen animal on its appointed day. There would be some eating, drinking and general frolicking and fellowship in addition to the serious business of watching for the weather forecast. As the German settlers migrated south and west, they brought their customs with them. While there were never organized lodges among Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont settlers, there were some in other parts of Virginia, notably in Highland County. Today, the weatherforecasting aspect of groundhog lore remains.
