Snow dumped on the county by winter storms in the past three weeks continues to ice over secondary roads at the same time that it’s melting down Rappahannock’s snow removal budget.
According the highway department resident engineer Don Askew $88,000 was allocated this winter for snow removal from primary roads. Of that amount, $63,000 or 71 percent has been spent as of this week. The budget for secondary road snow clearance on secondary roads is in better shape with $18,000 or 45 percent expended from the $40,000 allocated.
“We spend more manpower and chemicals— especially chemicals—on the primary roads because we have two going over mountains in Rappahannock," Askew explained.
