He offered a few tips for the novice sweep. When cleaning a fireplace chimney, remove the damper and then cover the front of the Fireplace with a sheet of newspaper so creosote and ash won’t fly all over the room.

One person climbs up the roof and drops a rope down the chimney. A second person then ties a flue brush to the rope, working through a flap cut in the center of the fireplace covering. The flue brush is pulled up through the chimney, dislodging creosote that has accumulated on the walls.
