Old Holiday
As a holiday, February 2 goes back to the Middle Ages when it was known as a Witches Sabbath, one of four such days each year. On a Witches Sabbath, witches were believed to ride their broomsticks, rakes or pokers to a quarterly meeting. The other gathering dates were Roodmas on April 30; Lammas, August 1; and Halloween, October 31.
In many Christian countries, February 2 was celebrated as an important religious holiday known as Candlemas Day of Purification of the Virgin. The celebration was held 40 days after Christmas as the time Mary was believed to have presented Jesus at the temple. At Catholic churches, worshippers carried candles in a procession to Mass.
