Early settlers of the Blue Ridge Mountains relied heavily on the game that was abundant here: bear, deer, rabbit, squirrel, coon, groundhog, possum and wild turkey. These they hunted mostly with the “long rifle" - so named because the gun had a long barrel making it possible to use slow-burning gunpowder.
