Although it won't be confirmed until February 1, it could well be that fewer persons lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes on Virginia’s highways during 1981 than in any year since 1963.
Current State Police tabulations show that 1,011 persons were killed on the State's highways during the past year compared to 1,045 in 1980; 1,014 in 1979 and 989 in 1963. However, final figures will also include any deaths which eventually result from a motor vehicle crash and occur within 30 days of the crash.
Virginia most certainly will have a mark to be proud of in terms of pedestrian safety. State Police figures indicate the total highway fatalities include 158 pedestrians, the fewest since 1961 when 157 pedestrians died. In fact, the 158 total would be the fourth lowest count since Virginia began keeping pedestrian figures in 1934. The record for fewest pedestrians killed is 151 in 1958.
