The issue of trapping came up at a meeting called earlier this year by the supervisors to address the problem of hunting abuses in Rappahannock.
The recommendations of a special committee appointed by the supervisors centered around petitioning the Virginia Game Commission to equalize the deer season east and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and prohibit running deer with dogs in Rappahannock. In a split vote, the supervisors later endorsed the committee's recommendations.
Rappahannock’s requests will be considered at the Game Commission’s public hearing on hunting regulations set for February 26 in Richmond.
There was some confusion at that earlier meeting of the supervisors, however, over what can be done locally if the Game Commission fails to ban running deer with dogs in the county.
The 1962 opinion referred to by Baliles in his letter to Baumgardner states that the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries is vested with sole jurisdiction to enforce all laws for the protection, propagation and preservation of game birds and animals.
