Also in relation to an issue which arose at the supervisors' meeting on hunting abuses, Baumgardner requested a second opinion from the Attorney General on enforcement powers of game wardens.
In an answer dated February 11, Baliles replied that current law vests game wardens with authority to enforce specifically the hunting, trapping and inland fish laws. and. further, with general police powers on properties owned or controlled by the Commission.
In addition, wardens are authorized to enforce certain other specified laws including drunk in public, disorderly conduct and misdemeanors of that character, according to the Attorney General's opinion.
But with those exceptions, Baliles stated, game wardens may not enforce the general criminal laws of the Commonwealth.
