After efforts to persuade the Virginia Game Commission to change regulations regarding length of deer season and hunting with dogs apparently proved unsuccessful last week, the Rappahannock supervisors switched tactics at Monday’s board meeting to attack »*Jiunter abuses with local laws.
At the request of the board’s special committee on hunting problems, the supervisors voted 4-0 with Hubert Gilkey abstaining to advertise ordinances prohibiting hunting within 300 feet of a road and banning the hunting of deer with dogs for public hearing on April 5.
Capt. William Keim told the supervisors that he, Homer Henry, Eric Forester and Bob Dennis attended the Game Commission’s public hearing in Richmond on February 26. According to Keim, the commission’s professional staff opposed both regulation changes sought by Rappahannock: equalization of deer season across the state and prohibition of running deer with dogs in Rappahannock County.
