already advised the board that its budget work sessions must be open to the public under Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act, the board voted unanimously at the start of last Tuesday’s meeting to seek advice from a school law expert on whether they can meet in private at a member’s home to discuss the budget and anything else related to the schools.
Lane maintained that a closed session would benefit "all of us, the county and our school system” by giving the board members the opportunity to "bring up any little strange ideas we have without it hitting the press.”
His motion to check with Phillip Stone, the school board's special legal counsel, was seconded by Eastham and passed unanimously. “It wouldn’t hurt to have the perimeters of the Freedom of Information Act explained," Reeve added.
