If you see a helicopter hovering over electric lines in this area, don't be alarmed.
It’s part of Potomac Edison’s preventative maintenance program for transmission and distribution lines to spot equipment that needs repair.
"We’re looking for anything that might eventually cause a problem.” according to PE Assistant Division Manager Jim Poffenberger. "so we can dispatch a ground crew and repair it as quickly as possible. We think we have a good record of electric reliability. This is one way to keep that record intact.”
The helicopter, which carries a pilot and a PE observer noting and recording any problem, will patrol about 8,000 miles of lirie in the utility’s service area before mid-year.
