For its part in the program, the locality must furnish supplies, facilities and 31 percent of the salary of a part-time dental assistant. In addition, Einarson said, the health department must supervise the new dentist. He noted that facilities and equipment, including a dental chair, are already available in the health department's offices.
Currently, two part-time dentists use the office a few hours per week, sponsored jointly by the health department and the Teachers’ Association Dental Program which put up $8,000 to secure state matching funds. But the part-time dentists have only a minimal number of hours available for work in Rappahannock, making it some time before they will be able to get through the backlog of cases referred by thj schools, Einarson said.
