Major decisions guiding the management, operations and development of Shenandoah National Park for the next 10 to 15-year period have been made by James W. Coleman, Jr., the Director of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the National Park Service.
The selected alternatives call for continuation of the Park’s 50-year tradition of cooperation with adjoining landowners in accepting useful donations of property and in making equal value land exchanges. “The Zone of Cooperative Protection option was not selected,” said Coleman, “because of its lack of support by local governments and citizenry.” The Park's natural resources will be afforded better protection through an increase in^ research, and additional\ emphasis will be yiven to the preservation and interpretation of the Park's historic and cultural resources.
The forthcoming draft general management plaa will not introduce or encourage any new visitor activities, but will expand programs necessary to provide for the use and understanding of the Park.
