side was better. A few held with the west slope and even fewer with the east. One said that they could most certainly be found in abandoned apple orchards, a view also held in England. Some recommended looking near the base of poplar trees; some about the stumps of hard pines. A few suggested that one should not neglect the ground around oak trees, but to ignore the hickory, walnut and locust.
Armed with all of this information, I awaited in confidence the 1982 season, and the Chaucerian showers of April that would pierce to the root the drought of March and also set conditions for the emergence of the merkles. Alas, March and April were dry. Merkle time came and went. There were no tell-tale cars at road side. I saw no one slip stealthily into my woods or into the woods of my neighbors. It was a lost season.
As April of 1988 approached, I was beginning to have doubts and reservations about the merkle and the merkle hunters. They were reasonable doubts. My faith still held firm.
