The incidents include \ a number of episodes ranging from "inappropriate" references to Commissioner Morton's race and sex that had come to Dr. Diener’s attention, to a break-in of her home.
Commissioner Morton also says that she has received harassing and threatening phone calls causing her to have her telephone number, which is unlisted, changed twice. Since the break-in, she has moved.
There are also rumors that she has been followed by persons unknown, although she says she is personally unaware that this has happened. There are also rumors that certain unidentified persons in her department have been “bribed" to keep a close check on her arrivals and departures from her office.
At midweek Dr. Diener and Commissioner Morton told reporters the police investigation had uncovered no criminal violations by anyone in the Department. Diener said an internal administrative review of the situation is continuing.
Dr. Diener also reveled that she, too, had received “four or five” telephoned death threats. She said she was undisturbed by them because she believed anyone in public life was likely to receive crank phone calls.
Neither Dr. Diener nor Commissioner Morton could say with certainty how much of the harassment was related to the commissioner’s job, or how much of it originated within her department.
Nor could they say whether it was related to her race or sex, or to several tough-minded reforms she has instituted within her department in her effort to bring it under control.
