The United States needs to clarify the aims of its recent activities in Latin America.

Are we trying to help our neighbors or use them as a buffer zone in our hot and cold running global war with Russia? Are we trying to promote freedom in this hemisphere or just trying to keep from having to fight the commies in Texas?

Experience shows we are not likely to accomplish both.

Traditionally, the U. S. has been quite willing to forego the benign big brother stuff in favor of whatever intervention was thought necessary to protect our best interests. Over the years, we've propped up many a Latin tyrant and sent many a Marine marching to "the halls of Montezuma." We are consistent about taking care of business and looking out for number one.
