Not long after this the war came to an end. The colored population of the country were declared forever free. The brave soldiers of both countries was discharged from their respective armies and returned to the bossom of their families. As the bond man had been emancipated and released from his slavish chains.
As soon as the Union recovered from its terrible shock that the war had given when peace was confidentially restored to the land.
In the year 1871 hundreds of teachers was needed to conduct the newly establish Schools. In the southern states it was rare and hard to find a colored man even educated enough to teach a primery school. Of course the colored people were ignorant in regard to the science of learning as their education had formerly been prohibited by law. I was sent for and examined by the county Superintendant and passed the examination on three of the Primary branches was also advised to study myself. Now for the first time I began to feel that my slumbering and deficent education would yet prove to be an elevation of myself and a blessing to my Race.
