It was a fantastic climax at last week’s home track meet with Luray -- a Hollywood ending, a finish that will be remembered for years to come by Panther fans.
The score was Luray 56, Rappahannock 53 with only the mile relay left in the girls’ competition. The winner would get five points, the loser nothing.
Kelly Bristol, Ann Tupper. Ann Oliver and Brenda Walker hucraled before the race, offering each other moral support and encourage, psyching each other up for maximum effort.
By the third pass of the baton, Luray’s girls were in front by 25 yards. Brenda Walker started the final leg. She ran with thj| shouts of ecstatic fans and teammates and she ran with inspiration, pulling from somewhere the speed to make up that 25 yards. And as she circled the track, catching the Luray anchor, passing her and adding the five points Rappahannock needed to win, the fans and her teammates ran with her.
