With two merkles 1 got from the one successful merkle hunter I was able to intercept this year, I have begun training my dog. 1 have showed her what a merkle looks like. I have let her smell the merkle, and then eat it after I had sauteed it in margarine, according to the recipe of the telephone man. I am hoping, especially since she has never shown any of the special talents of any recognized breed ot dog, that she may develop into a “merkle hound”, with the special gifts of “truffle hounds” and “truffle pigs" used in Europe to find the elusive and highly favored subterranean truffle mushroom.
1 have also decided that next year, I will not wait for the merkle hunters to emerge from the woods but will follow them, Indian fashion, to see where they go and waht they do in pursuit of the merkle. All of these things failing, I may establish myself in the ideal forest situation on a merkle morning and wait silently, listening for the sound of an emerging merkle. Net in hand, I will be ready to catch it the moment it shows its rough head above the litter and debris of the forest floor.
