After a three-hour search, resting on a stump of hard pine adjacent to a poplar tree, the exact spot where by all instructions the merkle should be found, and with my despondent dog’s head in my lap, I began to have more doubts about the integrity of merkle hunters.
1 reflected that none that I knew had ever offered to let me accompany him on a hunt. 1 had been asked to go on coon hunts and to go trout fishing. I had been told which ponds had fish, where wild turkeys roosted, and where blackberries could be found. I had accepted some of these invitations and followed some of the directions given and found them reliable. I could not say the same of those who had talked with me of merkles or had given me advice. I could not say that any one of them had in fact deceived me, nor 1 could % say that any one of them had, in so far as I coulddetermine, told me the truth. What they had done was something between truth and falsehood.
I have given up on this merkle season, but not on merkles, and have begun preparing for 1984. I have not despaired, but I have been disillusioned. I am putting aside all the advice I
