Flash floods arc a fact of life - and death—along rivers, streams and other low-lying areas. Most (lash floods occur within a few hours of localized heavy rain. Occasionally they are caused by heavy rain following local snow melt, ice jams, or dam failures.
During the last decade, flash floods were the leading cause of death and destruction from weatherrelated storms. Throughout the United States, the flash flood death toll averaged about 200, twice the yearly rate of the 1900’s and triple the yearly rate of the 1940’s. The flash flood of 1979 in which Gene and Virginia Wood were swept off a bridge just yards from their home in Fletcher’s Mill is the most recent tragic example in Rappahannock's history.
