Lane acknowledged that everyone attending Monday’s public hearing appeared in favor of increased school expenses that would result in higher local taxes. However, he reported that he’d been contacted by people not at the hearing who expressed opposition to a tax hike. “I’m condemned for either wanting to keep taxes down or for being the only person in the county who can afford to pay them,” joked Lane, whose family corporation, Lane Industries, is Rappahannock’s largest single landowner.
