It’s a relatively recent phenomenon—an unusual dance that combines the isolation techniques of mime and modern dance, the athletics of gymnastics and the rhythms of soul. And, like a marble cake, it swirls to create a smooth and perfect recipe. It’s called breakdancing.
Breakdancing made its formal public debut in Washington on Fodderstack Day. Breakdancers and aerobic dancers both were part of events sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for Arts in the Community (RAAC).
Actually, there were two breakdancing groups. The Breakazoids, four young men from Prince William County, joined local youths Patrick Brown of Flint Hill and Herbert Shanks of Washington.
RAAC director Laurie Marshall invited the Breakazoids after hearing about them through Cheryl Taylor of Old Hollow.
