To begin with, the soil at the Ski Area is mostly sand, loam and rocks. It all adds ■ up to one thing: drainage problems. If the area is to house 100 to 115 people along with 50 employees and an undetermined number of visitors, combined with laundry, dishwashing, bathing, etc., then I think the area would need a waste water disposal system compatible to the one present proposed for the town of Sperryville. There is no way the land between where the buildings will be and where Rush River will contipue to be can absorb or hold this much waste water. We have spent years and lots of money to clean up the problem in Sperryville. Why create another one just as bad -in Harris Hollow? Rush >i River may have had its classification changed by Richmond but it hasn’t changed in Harris Hollow, not yet anyway.
If I were a resident of the town of Washington, I would be very concerned about my water supply, as the town well is located on the banks of Rush River. It may take 10 to 15 years for the waste water to find its way into the water table. It could be a lot sooner. Thank God I live above the Ski Area. This old country boy knows that water and everything else flows down hill!
I could fill this paper with other rasons why the RCIL should not be built in Harris Hollow. I’ve seen the road closed for days due to snow, floods, and ice storms. I’ve had to borrow a generator to keep the food in my freezer from spoiling when the electricity was off for more than three days. There are various poisonous snakes and insects to constantly nibble on you during the summer months. It is a long way to the nearest hospital; the Medical Center at Washington is already overused. If you have to wait a half hour now to see a doctor, you will have to wait longer with the additional people.
The Center for Independent Living will be expensive to build and operate,
