As RCHS fans raced back and forth from one side of the oval to the other, Wayne Woodard and Chris Caperton took first and fourth in the 200 with times of 23.98 and 26.17. “Wayne came out of the first turn and seemed to move into another gear to burst ahead of the field,” Spieker recalled.
Then, in what has to rank as the top group effort of the afternoon, the Panthers swept the two mile, capturing first, second, third and fourth. Rappahannock’s one-two distance punch, Scott Keithley and Ronnie Atkins, lapped the rest of the runners, including teammates Will Oliver and John Dodson. Keithley posted his best time at the distance, 10:18, his smile widening as each stride brought him closer to the mark. Atkins finished in 10:34, Oliver in 11:42 and Dodson in 11:52.
Then the mile relay contingent of Dexter Freeman, James Dennis, Chris Caperton and Craig Kenyon took second. “That was the icing on the cake,” Spieker said. The finish ahead of Brentsville came despite a dropped baton. The Rappahannock foursome had first by 20 yards when Dennis, running his first relay ever in his first track season, misjudged the distance needed to hand off.
