The Board of Supervisors, during a meeting June 24, approved a 58 cent tax levy for the 1985-86 fiscal year. That was the final action taken by the board before approving the entire budget. The levy on personal property will remain at $5.60 per $100 of assessed value.
The board arrived at the 58 cent mark after cutting $110,000 from the contemplated expenditures that were advertised in the Rappahannock News. The cuts were made during three work sessions over the past three weeks. Also, the supervisors were able to draw $90,000 from the county’s surplus and still maintain the desired surplus of 5 percent of the budget, according to auditor Wally Cox. The surplus is now $210,000.
In cutting $110,000, the board slashed the following amounts from the following categories: 1) Clerk of the Board, $26,600, 2) Maintenance, $20,000, 3) Jail, $15,000, 4) Sheriff, $11,000, 5) Treasurer, $9,000, 6) Building Inspection, $7,000, 7) Zoning Administration, $7,000, 8) Circuit Court, $5,000, 9) Commonwealth’s Attorney, $5,000, 10) BZA, $1,000. The rest of the cuts came in smaller amounts.
