A DAR day will be held at Ashlawn July 20 at which time a DAR marker will be dedicated, followed by luncheon and a tour of Ashlawn. Members were urged to attend this function. Reservations must be sent by July 6 to: Mrs. Lewis B. Johnson, Jr. “Mooreland”, Rt. 1, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.
Mrs. Nelson Lane was named Good Citizen chairman, serving the unexpired term of Mrs. Paul Frantz who will be moving to Roanoke.
Mrs. James Harkness, Flag chairman, had as her topic “Honoring the Flag.” She said, our flag is a proud and -Sacred.-Symbol and is ..an emblem of unity.
Mrs. Harkness gave the history of the Pledge of Allegiance and reviewed the correct ways of displaying the flag. The entire membership was in wholeheart agreement that more emphasis needed to be placed on a greater respect and knowledge of the flag in all schools.
The program ended with Mrs. Woodruff Kearns reading her original Flag Poem which follows: Fling out our banner! Float it free Skyward and seaward, high and wide The Flag that flies for you and me We honor with our loyal pride. Fling out our banner! See it wave O’er Mountains, lakes, and grassy plains; O’er freedom’s land of patriot’s brave Where liberty of life remains Fling out Old Glory coast to coast Where silver waves touch golden sand The Stars and Stripes of which we boast Are symbols proud for which we stand Fling out our Flag with colors fair Of red and white—star-spangled blue May we always see it flying there And, under, God, to it be true.
