Americans waste energy, food, gasoline and even farmland, according to three members of the British Federation of Young Farmers who recently visited Fauquier County.

The visitors — Peter Hester and Alec Jones of Forest of Dean and Vicky Roe of Bristol — stayed with the Ronald Leonard family in Midland and the Norman Coyners in Delaplane. In an interview last week, the young farmers compared agriculture practices in America with the more “intensive” farm life in Great Britain.

British farmers use every available inch of soil and often plant their crops right up to the road. More fertilizers and care are invested into the soil, which in turn reaps higher yields, the British farmers said.

Ritchie reappointed

to School Board

School Board Chairman C. Hunter Ritchie (Lee District) was reappointed unanimously to his seventh term last Friday by the Fauquier Selection Commission.

For the first time, the five commissioners individually interviewed the three candidates and questioned them about school curriculum, proposed building expansions and the amount of time they had to perform School Board duties.

After the meeting, Commissioner Charles Gray Jr. (Cedar Run District), who was elected chairman at Friday’s meeting, said the commission favored Mr. Ritchie, a 24-year veteran of the board, because “he’s done a good job, his availability . . . everything we discussed in executive session.”
