Two hundred and nine years after it declared independence from England, the United States of America finds itself strangely dependent on the whims of terrorists in the middle east and elsewhere around the world. As we go to press, the nation’s eye is fixed on Beirut where the fate of 40 American hostages has yet to be decided.
By now it is well known that middle east terrorists are of a different mind-set than were the redcoats. In our English adversaries, we took for granted a belief in the dignity and value of life - namely, this life. That belief alone, if it is shared by rivals at war, provides perhaps the only reliable assumptions that each side can make about the other.
