turtles (which prey on wood ducks) and pest beavers. Drained areas are seeded with millet and subsequently flooded as the millet goes to seed to provide abundant duck food.
Wood ducks seem to be a special favorite at Keim’s place. “They don’t like people. They’re a very wary, very wild bird,” he said.
There are a total of 28 specially built nesting boxes for wood ducks. “We’ve had 80 percent occupancy this year,” said Keim. “I try to increase the number of nesting boxes by 10 percent each year.”
The big bird houses, each with an elliptical entrance hole, are perched high above the water on long poles and protected from climbing predators with large metal shields. How do the ducklings return to their homes after they jump out?
“They don’t,” Keim explained. “These boxes that you see have a wire screen on the inside leading up to the hole. Otherwise, the chicks couldn’t even climb out of the nest. Once they leave it, they’re on their own. I’ve seen them come out of sycamore trees, from 30 feet up - it doesn’t hurt them when they hit the ground.”
