Baliles said he was not only carrying out an earlier promise to resign if nominated for governor but was following the tradition of previous Dem^ cratic attorneys general who successfully ran for governor.
Breaking with tradition in 1981 was Republican Attorney General Marshall Coleman, who declined to step down while unsuccessfully campaigning for governor against Robb.
Insisting that the state’s legal matters were being tended to, Coleman drew half pay as attorney general during the campaign.
He found himself frequently defending against charges that some of his actions as attorney general were deliberately taken to enhance his image as a candidate for governor.
Baliles was nominated without opposition at the state Democratic convention here June 8. Lt. Gov. Richard J. Davis had withdrawn from the race in late April.
