The upcoming variety show on Saturday, June 29 at 8 p.m. in the Gay St. Theater will bring performers never seen on Washington’s stage before. Fiddler Joe Butler will be accompanying Anne Howard’s banjo behind daughter Angie Howard’s tap routine. Newly arrived Steve Bailey of Culpeper will be playing blues guitar. Some favorites of last year’s Talent Showcase will be returning this year, such as Van Veselka. He will take the spotlight again reading an original work of prose/poetry.
Herbert Shanks will be dancing to an unusual vocal arrangement that was introduced by Pilobolus Dance Company’s Artistic Director Jonathan Wolken when he gave a choreography workshop to Rappahannock public school students. Herbert attended the workshop which was sponsored by RAAC.
A new angle of this year’s showcase will be the presence of John Lam of the Record Den in Culpeper. Lam was a former promoter for Atlantic Records, who worked with Ike and Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Bobby Darin and Andy Williams. He will be available to give professional feedback to the performers and will be writing a review.
This year’s Talent Showcase is being directed by Cathy Kiley with consultations from Pam Russell and Laurie Marshall. Steve Hostetter will be the host. Admission is $3 for seniors and students and $5 for adults. Tickets are available at Brambles and Middle St. Gallery.
