THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF FREEDOM need to be proclaimed along with the freedom we have in Christ. Two weeks ago we ran an article emphasizing the freedom, so here is a foUow-up on the responsibilities.
The responsibilities of Christians are found throughout the New Testament. Paul gives a generalized summary of them in Galatians 5:13 - 6:11. Old Testament sacrifice laws and modem church dress codes and conduct codes deal with externals. An unsaved person can abide by all of them for all his life, and still be unsaved. The passage in Galatians deals with internals, with things which are produced by the Holy Spirit working in and through a saved person.
Paul begins by stating that freedom in Christ is not a license to sin, and should not be used as an excuse to gratify the lusts of our sinful nature, but rather should be taken as an opportunity to serve one another. Herein lies one of the beauties of our freedom: since we don’t have to work to get or keep our salvation, we can use the time that 1 would have been thus occupied to serve one another.
