RICHMOND (AP)—Democrat Gerald L. Baliles says you can’t properly run for governor and be attorney general at the same time.
He announced at a news conference here Monday he will resign as the state’s top legal officer June 30 to oarry on a full-time campaign against Republican Wyatt Durrette.
"I’ll be doing a lot of traveling across this state,” he said.
“I do not wish to see the actions of the attorney general’s office challenged or scrutinized for political motives during the remaining six months of my term,” Baliles added.
Gov. Charles S. Robb lauded Baliles for distinctive service and immediately named Chief Deputy Attorney General William G. Broaddus to succeed him until a newly elected attorney general takes office next January
Broaddus, 42, a longtime friend and professional associate of Baliles, said, I look forward to continuing the remarkable commitment and march toward excellence of Jerry Baliles.”
