Marijuana Crop
Gov. Charles S. Robb announced recently that the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation will join the Virginia State Police and other local, state, and federal agencies this year in a major public information, education, and assistance effort to curb the marijuana crop being grown in the Commonwealth.
Virginia State Police and the Farm Bureau Federation are developing a color brochure which they hope will help fanners and other persons j readily identify marijuana. State Police also have established a toll free telephone number (1-800-553-DOPE) which will be available on a 24-hour, daily basis for persons to report marijuana sightings. Callers will not have to identify themselves.
Virginia’s 1983 Marijuana Eradication/Suppression Program resulted in the location and destruction of more than 42,000 plants in 88 counties and nine cities and, in 1984, in excess of 26,000 plants in 69 countries and 12 cities. Estimated street value of the seized two-year crop was $28.7 million.
The marijuana growing season in Virginia generally extends from approximately June 1 through September 30 and, often, into October.
