however, expect absolutely anything. That is, we do not assume in our enemy the degree of fanaticism necessary to smile while committing suicide. When such acts cannot be ruled out, indeed when such acts come to be expected, then warfare has reached a new pitch of insanity.
It seems horrible to kill others in war, yet it is understandable because that has often been a declared objective. On the other hand, to kill oneself in war with as little remorse as one would kill others, as occurs in the middle east, seems not only horrible but maniacal in some extreme sense.
On that gloomy note, it is good to remember all that we in America have to celebrate on Independence Day, not the least of which is our belief that life, here and now, is of great worth.
