Com is the standard duck food, but Keim said that com is nutritionally deficient - it lacks a balanced supply of amino acids. “It won’t help them brged,” he said, adding that in other countries, “rice is planted everywhere—wetland rice and dryland rice. But I can’t find seed to plant it.”
Another unsolved technical problem is the morning glory, a prolific weed that covers drained areas and chokes out smartweed, which is highly desirable mallard food. Keim would like to find a way to selectively kill the morning glory vines.
“Virginia landowners have no incentives for encouraging wildlife,” Keim maintains. One such incentive could be a tax deduction for wildlife management practices. He points out that in Maryland, “every dollar spent for waterfowl habitat improvement is tax deductible.
