Billy Bohan, the state highway department’s assistant environmentalist for Culpeper District, plays Johnny Appleseed.
He often picks thistle heads loaded with larvae from weevil infested plots and totes them in bags to unconquered fields.
But the highway department is not ready to give the public permission to harvest the helpful insect from its test plots, at least not officially.
Scott Bywaters, Culpeper District’s environmental manager, explained that weevil gatherers could pose safety hazards on the shoulders and median strips. “At this point in time,” he said, weevil gathering will not be allowed on highway rights-ofway. “But I’m not saying it isn’t down the road,” he added.
However, weevils are not respectful of property lines and stray from the test plots to adjacent farm fields where the infested thistle heads are ripe for ;he picking. Weevil hunters should ask ;he field owner’s permission.
